This manual was created based on the results of the student competition "Soviet Past: (Re)Thinking History" as part of the international project "History Competition in Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine 2.0, and is implemented jointly by DVV International in Ukraine in Ukraine and the All-Ukrainian Association "Nova Doba" with the support of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. The manual uses quotes, excerpts from the competition entries, and field material collected by the participants of the competition.

Within the framework of the competition, Nova Doba received 290 collective works from different regions of Ukraine, representing the local dimension of Ukrainian Soviet history in different formats. Each of them contains incredibly rich material collected by the participants in archives and libraries, through interviews with eyewitnesses - neighbors, teachers, parents. This information served as the inspiration for the writing of the proposed manual and became one of its components.

The manual "How to Work with the Soviet Past in History Classes" is an attempt to provide history teachers with modern tools that are available in academic science for critical study, comprehension, and rethinking of the Soviet experience in school courses on Ukrainian history. It places sources on Soviet history in historical and thematic context, provide examples of research, and finally refer to the rich critical literature in Ukrainian.

The manual can be downloaded here.
