Eight Decades of Textbook Collaboration for Mutual Understanding and Quality Education

This brochure has been produced to mark the respective 80th and 75th anniversaries of the founding of UNESCO and the Georg Eckert Institute. It traces the joint activities of these two institutions by highlighting key aspects of their collaboration as well as the changes in international textbook work over the past three-quarters of a century.

Completion of the "Meeting Memories" Project

The project “Meeting Memories: Learning from the Past to Confront Dehumanization Today” (September 2020 – February 2023) aimed to raise awareness on the process of dehumanization that led to the “othering” and the extermination of different social groups during the 1930s and 1940s, and to reflect on similar patterns happening today. It was coordinated by Documenta – Center for dealing with the past, with the support of its partners from Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Serbia, and Slovenia. In the recently pulished booklet as one of the main project results, you can find suggestions on methods and activities for youth and students, as well as recommendations on the project’s topics.

A manual for history teachers "How to Work with the Soviet Past in History Classes" from Nova Doba

The manual is an attempt to provide history teachers with modern tools that are available in academic science for critical study, comprehension, and rethinking of the Soviet experience in school courses on Ukrainian history. It places sources on Soviet history in historical and thematic context, provide examples of research, and finally refer to the rich critical literature in Ukrainian.

The History of the Georg Eckert Institute

Textbook revision and research have historically been two of the central pillars of the work of the Georg Eckert Institute, and remain so today. The history of the Institute demonstrates just how intertwined they are. Against this backdrop, the development of the Institute is presented and critically examined from different perspectives, using a broad range of source materials.

EFREC Policy Brief

The Policy Brief provides an overview of the challenges for the work of bilateral and multilateral initiatives in textbook work that have been observed since the 2000s. In addition, the text describes how the multilateral cooperation network for historical-political education in Europe is facing these challenges and provides insights on EFREC's previous activities and initial results.
