European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI)

The ECMI is a research center that was established in Flensburg, at the heart of the Danish-German border region, in order to draw from the encouraging example of peaceful coexistence between minorities and majorities achieved here. ECMI’s promotes interdisciplinary research on issues related to minorities and majorities in a European perspective and contributes to the improvement of interethnic relations in those parts of Western and Eastern Europe where ethno-political tension and conflict prevail. The ECMI produces recommendations, academic and policy-oriented research analyses, and offers advisory services concerning minority-majority relations in Europe.

The geographical focus of the ECMI covers the Euro-Asian continent and is usually determined by the expertise carried by the multidisciplinary team of the centre. Current scope of our work includes the European countries (with the specific accent on Romania, Hungary, Baltic States, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Russia, Ukraine, Greece), but also former Yugoslavia, Belarus along with Asian countries such as Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgistan. The research work is thematically organized around five research clusters: culture and diversity; conflict and security; justice and governance; politics and civil society; equality and inclusion.
