Within the scope of celebration of 75th anniversary of Council of Europe and in the wake of 3rd Annual Conference of Observatory on History Teaching in Europe, Belgrade History Teaching Symposium continues its mission of advocating for quality history education that fosters democratic culture, intercultural understanding, diversity, and exchange of different innovative education practices among, academics, teachers, educators, and students.
The 3rd Belgrade Symposium Disarming History through panel sessions and creative workshops intends to reflect upon history teaching in post-conflict environment, as well as to draw attention on distortion and misuse of history education for political, ideological, and military purposes. The topic is enhanced after the aggression of Russian Federation on Ukraine in 2022, and escalation of long-lasting Israel – Palestine conflict in 2023. Legacy of wars that followed dissolution of Yugoslavia are still challenging topic for history teachers in the Balkans.
The 3rd Belgrade Symposium will create an opportunity to discuss and analyse conceptual, linguistic, didactic, and educational approach dealing with issue of war, peace, promoted militant narratives in history teaching for the first time on regional level.
