[International Knowledge Exchange. Textbook Revision and the International Textbook Institute in Braunschweig after the Second World War]
This paper presents processes of knowledge exchange using the example of textbook revision in post-war Germany. Based on Phillips and Ochs’ model of ‘policy borrowing’ (2003), it describes the personal, substantial and institutional links between German and international actors. Special consideration is given to the post-war textbook policy introduced by the British occupation authorities and by UNESCO, which reflected the principle of education that fostered international understanding. Using the example of the Braunschweig Textbook Institute and of international textbook revision, the paper shows that knowledge transfer was not one-directional and that standardisation processes in theory and practice were based on a mutually influencing network of participants and institutions.
