This chapter gives an overview of the history of textbook research, starting with textbook revision that was a major trigger for the development of this field from the 1970s onwards. The chapter covers key trends of textbook research reaching from research on minorities, gender and national identities to Europeanisation and transnational perspectives. It also sheds light on the development of research on the impact and reception of textbooks as well as on didactic textbook research, studies on the quality and use of textbooks and on textbook production. The authors conclude that textbook research has become a broad and multidisciplinary field which has opened up increasingly towards new areas, research methods and perspectives over recent decades.
