The project aims to improve the quality of history teaching in schools in Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine by promoting the critical teaching of history. Teachers shall be empowered to confidently address controversial issues in the classroom, and to also teach their students how to detect and study propagandistic history narratives.
The aim is to develop a toolkit for teachers for dealing with historical propaganda in the media and in research. It will also provide guidelines on how to distinguish reliable historical sources from false ones. To ensure that the toolkit meets the needs of history teachers, a desk research will be carried out in all project countries. It will investigate the current state of teacher training and school curricula in relation to history-based propaganda. As none of the project countries is the same, the toolkit will be adapted to the different regional characteristics.
The project is part of a cooperation between DVV International, Körber-Stiftung, Hazarashen – Armenian Center for Ethnological Studies, Georgian Association of History Educators (GAHE), Soviet Past Research Laboratory (SovLab), The National Association of Young Historians of Moldova (ANTIM), and NOVA DOBA – All Ukrainian Association of Teachers of History, Civic Education and Social Studies, that have been working together to establish history competitions in the project countries.
