The Joint Commission for Research into the Recent History of German-Russian Relations goes back to an initiative of the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the Russian President Boris Yeltsin in 1993/1994 and was founded in 1997 with the aim of promoting scientific research into German-Russian history in the 20th century and thus contributing to the consolidation of mutual trust between Russia and Germany. In fulfilment of this mission, it organises annual colloquia, initiates and promotes research and editing projects, and publishes the results of its own activities in German and Russian. Both sides of the Commission are committed to facilitating access to the archival holdings in Russia and Germany.
