German-Italian Historical Commission

Deutsch-italienische Historikerkommission
La Commissione storica italo-tedesca

The German-Italian Historical Commission was established in 2008/9 by Foreign Ministers Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Franco Frattini. The Historical Commission jointly researched the German-Italian wartime past, especially with regard to Italian military internees. It saw its work as a contribution to bringing the cultures of memory of the two countries closer together. It opted for an experiential-historical approach. The ten-member, high-level commission chaired by Professors Wolfgang Schieder and Mariano Gabriele was able to work in complete independence, and in December 2012 it presented a final report, which made a groundbreaking contribution to research into the common wartime past in the years 1943 to1945. The report is 182 pages long and it is divided into five chapters:

  • Germans and Italians between 1943 and 1945
  • The perspective of the German soldiers
  • The experiences of the Italian population with the German occupation forces
  • The experiences of the Italian military internees
  • Recommendations of the Commission
