La commission mixte d’historiens français et algériens
In July 2020, the French President Emmanuel Macron commissioned Algeria expert Benjamin Stora to prepare a report on issues related to the commemoration of colonisation and the Algerian war.
This report, submitted to the President in January 2021, sets out recommendations for moving forward on a path of appeasement and recognition of all memories. On this basis, the Emmanuel Macron launched several concrete initiatives and mandated a commission chaired by Benjamin Stora and including various personalities to elaborate these initiatives.
On the occasion of President Macron's trip to Algeria in August 2022, he agreed with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to create a joint commission of French and Algerian historians to work through the archives of both countries from the colonial period and the war of independence.
Chaired by historians Benjamin Stora and Mohamed Lahcen Zeghidi, the commission began its work in spring 2023.
