10th Academic Conference "Education - Culture - Society"

28–29/09/2022
Concepts of the content of historical education and their variability – from the Commission of National Education to the present day, September 28–29, 2022; University of Wrocław (Poland)

During the conference, participants will address the issue of the content of historical education. This topic seems to be at the centre of all discussions related to school history education, and the circumstances determining the appropriate choice of teaching content are among the more important determinants shaping the educational system. During the years of partition, at the reconstruction of the Polish state after World War I, during the occupation, or in the post-war period of the lack of full sovereignty as a school subject, it was perceived as an important component of building Polish patriotism and national consciousness. Priorities in history education seemed quite obvious at the time.

Over the last thirty years, under conditions of pluralism and democracy, many new proposals, experiences and concepts have emerged. Today, however, the visions of historians, didacticians and, even more so, politicians seem to diverge more and more clearly. So do we have any chance of a consensus? It is time for the historians and didacticians of history to make their voices heard. It is therefore worth discussing not only the content of education in the past, but above all what history will be, or should be, like in a few years (the pace of the changes taking place precludes a long-term perspective). A difficult but creative task would be to answer the question of whether we are able to diagnose and take into account the future social needs of history teaching.

Together with partners, EFREC will  will organise a panel on current challenges of bilateral and multilateral initiatives of historical education. The conference contributions will result in a academic publication, which will be published in the conference volume of the same name "Education - Culture - Society" (University of Wrocław).

The information was taken from the organizer's website.
